Looking around, it is not unreasonable to conclude that the world is at risk of unraveling. Indeed, there is much evidence of frayed social fabrics, eroded civil societies, degraded public spheres, and estranged relations with the natural environment. In this moment of malaise, it would be wise to recall the words of Martin Luther King Jr., who understood we are all joined in “an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.” Our task, I am convinced, must be to awaken that awareness of oneness, which I believe can be done at the local level where each of us resides, by nurturing caring communities that revere plant, animal, and human life. The entries below offer some of my thoughts on the many ways in which this can and does occur.
